SapphicAn umbrella term for women and woman-aligned people attracted to other women. It covers lesbians as well as many bi, pan, queer, and nonbinary people.
WLWWomen loving women. Online shorthand for women and woman-aligned people attracted to other women. In everyday use it overlaps almost entirely with sapphic.
LesbianUsually a woman attracted only to women. Some nonbinary people use the word too. Lesbian is a specific orientation; sapphic is the wider umbrella it sits under.
ButchA masculine-of-center identity and presentation with deep roots in lesbian and sapphic culture. Butch is an identity people claim for themselves, not a costume you put on someone else.
FemmeA feminine-of-center queer identity and presentation. In sapphic communities, femme names a deliberate, queer relationship to femininity rather than defaulting to straight ideas of womanhood.
StudA racially specific term used by some Black and Latinx masculine-of-center lesbians and sapphics. Non-Black people should not claim it.
Soft butchA masculine-of-center presentation that sits toward the softer or more androgynous side of butch. People use it when butch fits, but classic hard-butch aesthetics do not.
MascShort for masculine. In sapphic spaces it often describes a masculine-of-center look or vibe without committing to a more specific identity like butch or stud.
Late bloomerSomeone who recognizes or acts on sapphic or queer identity later in life, often after years of assuming they were straight. There is no cut-off age that makes the label valid.
QuestioningActively exploring sexual orientation, gender, or both. You can use sapphic while questioning. Nothing has to be settled first.
Gender-nonconformingGender expression that does not match the expectations usually attached to your gender. Many sapphics are GNC; the word describes expression, not a single identity.
A-specShort for asexual and aromantic spectrum. A-spec sapphics may feel little or no sexual or romantic attraction and still belong in women-loving-women community.
