Short for masculine. In sapphic spaces it often describes a masculine-of-center look or vibe without committing to a more specific identity like butch or stud.

Masc is useful when somebody wants to signal masculine presentation without picking up the full cultural weight of butch or stud. Dating apps and bios use it constantly for that reason.
It is descriptive more than historical. Butch and stud carry community lineages that masc, by itself, does not.
