What does sapphic mean?

Sapphic describes women and woman-aligned people who are attracted to other women. It works as an umbrella term, so it covers lesbians as well as bisexual, pansexual, and queer people, plus many nonbinary people who feel at home in that kind of attraction. People use the word two ways, and both are fine. Some treat it as a personal label. Others use it as a broad name for the whole community of women and woman-aligned people who love women. You do not need one tidy orientation to fit under it. A lesbian is sapphic. So is a bi woman dating another woman. So is a nonbinary person who is drawn to women and feels the word suits them. Dictionaries still define it plainly as relating to lesbians, but in everyday queer use it has stretched wider than that.

Is sapphic a sexuality or an umbrella term?

Sapphic is usually an umbrella term rather than a single sexual orientation. It groups together everyone whose attraction to women fits, including lesbians, bi and pan women, and many nonbinary people. Some people also use it as their own label when other words feel too narrow. A sexual orientation names who you are attracted to, like lesbian, bisexual, or pansexual. Sapphic works at a level above that. It points at a shared direction of attraction toward women, without pinning down the exact orientation underneath. That is why you can be both at once. A lesbian is sapphic. A bi woman is sapphic. The word does not replace your orientation; it sits alongside it and connects you to a wider community.

Where does the word sapphic come from?

Sapphic comes from Sappho, a Greek poet who lived on the island of Lesbos around 630 to 570 BCE and wrote about love between women. English used sapphic for her poetic meter first. The sense tied to attraction between women dates to the 1890s. Sappho wrote lyric poetry about desire and longing for women. Most of it survives only in fragments, so much of what we know about her comes from those scraps and from later writers. Her home island, Lesbos, is also where the word lesbian comes from. The English adjective arrived through French saphique and Latin Sapphicus, from the Greek Sapphikos, meaning of Sappho. At first it described her verse and her distinctive meter. The meaning we use now, about attraction between women, is recorded from the 1890s. The word had a quiet second life online before it went mainstream. One of its early digital uses was as the name of a 1980s mailing list for queer women, back when email mostly lived in universities.

How do you pronounce sapphic?

Sapphic is pronounced SAF-ik. It has two syllables, a short a like in cat, and the stress on the first syllable. In dictionary notation that is /ˈsæfɪk/. The related noun sapphism is said SAF-iz-uhm. Both the UK and US pronunciations are the same here: /ˈsæfɪk/, which sounds like SAF-ik. If it helps, it rhymes closely with traffic. The first syllable takes the stress, and the a is short, not drawn out. The name Sappho behind it is said SAF-oh.

What's the difference between sapphic and lesbian?

Lesbian usually means a woman attracted only to women, and some nonbinary people use it too. Sapphic is wider: it covers anyone whose attraction to women fits the umbrella. Every lesbian can call herself sapphic, but not every sapphic is a lesbian. The simplest way to hold it: lesbian is a specific orientation, and sapphic is an umbrella that lesbian sits under. A woman attracted only to women is a lesbian, and she is also sapphic. The reverse does not always hold. A bi woman dating a woman is sapphic but not a lesbian, because her attraction is not limited to women. Lesbian is not strictly cis-women-only either. Some nonbinary people who were assigned female at birth use it for their attraction to women, even when they do not fully identify as women. Which word fits you is yours to decide.

What does WLW mean?

WLW stands for women loving women. It covers women and woman-aligned people who are romantically or sexually drawn to other women, whatever their specific orientation. In everyday use, people treat WLW and sapphic as near-synonyms. WLW started as online shorthand and stuck. You will see it written in capitals or lowercase, often in bios, tags, and fan spaces. It takes in lesbians, bi and pan women, and other women-aligned people who love women. For most purposes, WLW and sapphic overlap almost entirely. The counterpart term for men who love men is MLM, and achillean is used the way sapphic is on the sapphic side.

Question 7

Can bisexual and pansexual people be sapphic?

Yes. Bisexual and pansexual people who are attracted to women fall under the sapphic umbrella, whether or not they are also attracted to other genders. You do not have to be attracted only to women to be sapphic. The through-line for sapphic is attraction to women. If that describes you, being bi or pan does not push you out. Plenty of bi and pan people use both labels, one for their orientation and sapphic for the community and the direction of that attraction. There is sometimes a worry that sapphic quietly means lesbian-only. It does not.

Can nonbinary and trans people be sapphic?

Yes. Trans women who love women are sapphic, and so are many nonbinary and gender-diverse people who are drawn to women and feel the word fits. The umbrella was widened on purpose so it would not center only cisgender women. Trans women are women, so a trans woman who loves women is sapphic in exactly the same way any other woman is. Nonbinary people, transmascs, and gender-nonconforming people who are drawn to women use the word too when it resonates. What matters is the attraction and whether the label feels like home. Some nonbinary people who do not fully identify as women still find sapphic describes their connection to women and to the community. Others prefer different words, and that is fine.

Question 9

Do I need to be sure of my sexuality to call myself sapphic?

Accepted Answer

No. You can use sapphic while you are questioning, if your feelings are fluid, or if you would rather not commit to a narrower label. Nothing has to be settled first, and you are allowed to change your mind later. Labels are tools, not tests. Sapphic is broad enough to cover people who are questioning, whose attractions shift over time, or who just do not want to narrow things down yet. You can try it on and see how it feels. Nobody at the door is going to ask you to prove anything. If the word gives you language for how you feel, it is yours to use, and you can revise it whenever you like.

What is the sapphic flag?

The most common sapphic flag has two pink stripes with a white band across the middle and a violet flower in the center. The pink stands for love, and the violet nods to Sappho and to the old custom of women giving each other violets as a sign of affection. The violet is the part with the most history. In Sappho's poetry, lovers are described wearing garlands of violets, and later generations of women gave each other the flower to signal romantic interest. Putting it at the center of the flag ties the symbol straight back to the poet the word comes from. The design is usually credited to a Tumblr user, lesbeux, in 2015, with a pair of violets in the middle. A 2017 version by the blog pride-color-schemes simplified it to a single violet, which is easier to draw and reproduce. Sapphics who want a symbol broader than the lesbian-specific flag often reach for this one.

What's the difference between the sapphic flag and the lesbian flag?

The sapphic flag is pink and white with a violet and stands for the whole women-loving-women umbrella. The widely used lesbian flag is the orange-to-pink sunset design made by Emily Gwen in 2018, which represents lesbians specifically. Many lesbians fly both. The two flags answer different questions. The sapphic flag says women-loving-women in the broad sense. The lesbian flag speaks to lesbians in particular, so a lesbian might use either or both depending on what she wants to say. The lesbian flag most people know now is the sunset design by Emily Gwen from 2018, a gradient from orange down to pink. Its stripes were given meanings running through gender nonconformity, independence, community, a unique relationship to womanhood, serenity, love, and femininity. A trimmed five-stripe version is the one you will see most often today. The sapphic flag, by contrast, leans on the pink-and-violet imagery rather than the orange tones.

The Sapphic Sanctuary is for lesbians, bi and pan people, trans women, and nonbinary and gender-nonconforming people who feel at home in sapphic spaces. People still working out their labels belong here too, and respectful allies who follow the guidelines are welcome. We center sapphic experiences without demanding that everyone use the same label. You might be newly out, years past caring about labels, or somewhere in between. If sapphic spaces feel like home to you, you are in the right place. Allies who listen well and respect the space are welcome too. The one thing we ask is simple: get people's names and pronouns right, and treat nobody's existence as a debate topic.

Yes. Making an account and taking part in the public forum is free. If we ever add optional paid features, we will explain them clearly before you pay for anything. Sign-up is handled through a standard account login, and joining the public conversation does not cost anything. There is no paywall on taking part.
