What's the difference between sapphic and lesbian?
Lesbian usually means a woman attracted only to women, and some nonbinary people use it too. Sapphic is wider: it covers anyone whose attraction to women fits the umbrella. Every lesbian can call herself sapphic, but not every sapphic is a lesbian.

The simplest way to hold it: lesbian is a specific orientation, and sapphic is an umbrella that lesbian sits under. A woman attracted only to women is a lesbian, and she is also sapphic.
The reverse does not always hold. A bi woman dating a woman is sapphic but not a lesbian, because her attraction is not limited to women. Our answer about bisexual and pansexual sapphics explains why the wider word matters.
Lesbian is not strictly cis-women-only either. Some nonbinary people who were assigned female at birth use it for their attraction to women, even when they do not fully identify as women (per the Trevor Project, cited by UC Santa Barbara's resource center). Which word fits you is yours to decide.
