my coworker said she's sapphic and i asked if that means lesbian and she said "kinda but not really" and then the meeting started.
i've been using the words like synonyms. am i being dense or is there a real split people care about.

lesbian is usually "women attracted to women only" (some nonbinary folks use it too). sapphic is the bigger umbrella. bi/pan people into women sit under it. so every lesbian can be sapphic. not every sapphic is a lesbian.

oh. that actually makes the "kinda but not really" make sense.

i say both depending on the room. with family i say lesbian because they panic less. with queer friends i say sapphic when i want the wider vibe.

people fight about the edges online. irl most folks just want to know if you date women.

there's a short faq on the site about this if you want the tidy version. i still just ask people what they use.
Vera
going to stop correcting people either way. wasted enough brain cells.
