working on a short story. character comes out at 45. every draft slides into misery memoir.

i want mess and humour and desire, not a lecture about wasted years. what helps you write that without the sermon.

    give her a specific want that isn't "acceptance." a crush. a trip. a stupid argument about dishes.

    avoid flashbacks that only exist to explain the pain. let present-tense weirdness carry it.
